As the science co-ordinator for the school I believed a school garden would be an essential part of our curriculum. We identified an area to develop and called in plans and quotes from 10 different gardening and landscaping companies. Whilst all of the plans were good, it was Tom Blanks' suggestion of the themed garden that stood out. It was clear to see that his teaching experience had successful implications in understanding what children would want and need. As well as this, he took into full account the ethos of our school and the practicality of the space given for the project. The final result was delivered to a high standard where he had created a stunning garden.
We can’t imagine our school without this garden now and the children are always eager to get into it and plant!

Gorringe Park Primary School's garden ‘The Temple of Bloom’ was inspired by our year one teacher Tom Blanks who wanted to create a garden that would not only get children outside to learn gardening but would eventually become a welcoming oasis in among the concrete of the school playground.
With help from his friends and some keen members of staff, Tom spent many evenings and weekends planning and preparing the plot. Pupils created a compost heap, a beach area made from salvaged and recycled materials, an animal habitat and much more.
The mayor of Merton visited the garden for it’s grand opening in May 2009 and was very impressed with the commitment, passion and perseverance that went into creating this wonderful outdoor space. The impact on the school has been significant. For pupils and teachers alike, it’s a place not only to learn about the environment and healthy lifestyles but to also enjoy and have fun.
